PRESS RELEASE: CYCLONIC STORM IN ORISSA

A severe cyclonic storm struck Orissa, causing widespread damage and loss of life and property. The exact number of persons who may have lost their lives and the extent of damage in terms of property and loss of livestock has yet to be worked out. The State Government is operating a number of relief camps and the Central Government Departments are in touch with the State Government to render necessary assistance. The following are the GOI guidelines for foreign relief assistance:

  1. GOI has decided not to make any formal appeal for International assistance. However, any assistance offered voluntarily, either in cash or kind, is acceptable.

  2. Relief assistance in cash has to be drawn in favour of "Prime Minister’s Relief Fund".

  3. The preferred route for assistance in kind is through the International Red Cross’ through reputed NOGs.

  4. Shri Bhagat Singh, Central Relief Commissioner, Ministry of Agriculture (Tel: 91-11-338 3977, Fax: 91-11-338 4555) will be the Nodal Point for coordinating relief and rehabilitation works from Delhi for the Orissa cyclone victims.

2. The Principal Resident Commissioner, Government of Orissa, New Delhi, is also coordinating transport of relief material received from various quarters from Delhi to Bhubaneshwar.
